As we enter National Nutrition Month, let’s talk foods & healthy eating.
First off, healthy eating starts at the grocery store, so it’s important to make nutritious choices. Here are some tips to help you shop smart.
Use the Nutrition Facts label to compare foods and find what’s right for you. Choose items higher in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and lower in saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, and added sugars.
Check the serving size when comparing calories and nutrients in different food products.
Balance calories in and out. A total intake of 2,000 calories a day is used as a general guide for nutrition advice. Your calorie needs may be higher or lower and vary depending on your age, sex, and physical activity level.
Eat before you shop.
Use fresh vegetables and fruits that are in season.
Try canned or frozen fruits and vegetables.
Nicole Berosek, Organizational Wellness Coordinator stated, “Using the smart shopping tips will help an individual stay on track while shopping, which in turn, allows better food choices while at home.”
What can worksites do to assist in promoting health and wellness in the workplace?
Implement food service guidelines or policies around cafeteria meals and/or vending machines.
Offer healthier options and physical activity policies at workplace meetings and events.
Implement strategies for developing and implementing sodium reduction programs, policies, and initiatives.
The Panhandle Worksite Wellness Council has sample nutrition and physical activity policies available to organizations and schools.
Berosek shared, “We are happy to assist organizations and schools on implementing necessary policies to help employees engage in their wellbeing. Along with these policies, we suggest providing additional education to employees. This will ensure the employee feels supported and receives the necessary assistance to make lasting changes.”
